Silver Spice Container - Filigree
ADDITIONAL INFO
Hexagonal silver tower-shaped spice container, standing on a round base. The container is made with delicate filigree work. From the container rises a tower, pointed with a flag. The technique used in this spice container, filigree, is a remarkable technique in which round or flat metal wires of varying thickness are worked on a skeletal structure to create a lacework effect, hence allowing a magnificent and festive result.
The end of the Sabbath is marked by the Havdalah (separation) ceremony, with its blessings over wine, candle and fragrant spices. The spice container is a distinctively Jewish object for the storage of spices used during the Havdalah ceremony. For the blessing over spices, various forms of plants are used, among them the myrtle branch, whose name in Hebrew - Hadas - is one of the names for the spice container.
