ADDITIONAL INFO
A beautiful silver Kiddush cup, designed and made by Avishai, a student and artist of the Bezalel School of Arts and Crafts, Jerusalem. The cup, influenced by the Bezalel style, is decorated with vegetal motifs including vine branches and grape clusters, and with three appropriate Hebrew verses (יין ישמח לבב אנוש, אין שמחה אלא ביין, חגים וזמנים לששון). The Kiddush cup is decorated with filigree work and is marked "Avishai, Sterling, Israel, ST. 925". The foot of the cup is slightly dented.
Yahya Avishai, a Yemenite Jew, was born in 1895. Avishai, a notable silversmith, worked in the silver department in the Bezalel School in 1919-1920. He was a member of the "Keter" group of silversmiths, and of the "Bezalel Manufacturers in Jerusalem Association" that was established in 1939 and operated until 1944.
The etching technique used in the item above is a technique in which the metal surface is decorated by using acid to create a rough-textured depression in the areas exposed to it. Areas that are not intended for etching are covered with an acid-resistant substance.
