Silver Kiddush Cup
ADDITIONAL INFO
A silver Kiddush cup, shaped as a hexagon, marked 925. The inside of the cup is gilded. There is added weight in the bottom part of the cup. The cup is highly detailed and densely decorated with grapevine twigs. The grapevine twigs decoration might be related to the fact that the Kiddush, the blessing recited to sanctify the Sabbath and Jewish holidays, is done over wine or grape juice.
The observance of the Sabbath is one of the central commandments of the Jewish way of life and includes respect and honor for the sanctity of the day and enjoyment of it. This is obtained by practicing special traditions regarding food and drink, fine utensils and clothing of appropriate quality.
The Kiddush cup, a main utensil used in the sanctification of the Sabbath, is usually made of silver, sometimes inscribed with words in honor of the Sabbath. The technique used in this unique cup, engraving, was probably made by hand, which enabled the work of small and refined details, hence allowing a magnificent and festive result.
