Silver Amulet Case
ADDITIONAL INFO
Silver cylindrical amulet case, highly detailed and beautifully decorated. The decorations seem to be related to the Commedia dell'arte - an early form of professional theatre, largely improvisational, which was very popular in Italy for about four centuries, from the 14th to the 18th century. The Commedia dell'arte, which evolved within Venice's alleys and squares, also took place among the Jewish community, which took an active part in performances and parades and even set up theaters that were considered the best in the city.
In Jewish communities, the amulet was believed to provide protection against danger and disaster. The amulets were worn by pregnant women, young children, and the sick as a charm against sickness and to ward off the evil eye. Amulets were also placed in the crib of a newborn for protection.
