Jerusalem wood products have been known since the 17th century. At the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, the art of olive wood carving gained increasing popularity among tourists and pilgrims. Christian, Muslim and Jewish artisans designed various types of tools and decorative items. A number of Jewish workshops existed in Jerusalem at the time, including the workshop of Rabbi Chaim Yaakov, a Jerusalemite who was the first in the local olive wood souvenir industry, and the workshop of Rabbi Yechiel Zvi Hirsch, a shopkeeper in the Old City, who designed olive wood items of a Jewish character.
